What is a NOTAM, and why it matters before a drone flight

A NOTAM is a notice of a temporary change to the airspace. What that means for a drone, the duty to check before every flight, and how you see it in the app.

In short

  • A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is a notice of a temporary change to the airspace — for example a closed area or a new restriction.
  • An area that is usually open can close for a limited time because of a NOTAM.
  • The regulations require checking airspace information, including NOTAMs, before every flight.
  • DroneOps shows the notices relevant to drones alongside the map.

What a NOTAM is

A NOTAM is an official notice of a temporary change in the state of the airspace or aviation facilities: a closed area, a new altitude limit, unusual activity or a new obstacle. Unlike the permanent airspace publications (PMAT), a NOTAM is temporary — it comes into force and expires on the dates and times stated in it.

The duty to check before every flight

Checking airspace information is not just a recommendation. The regulations require the pilot-in-command to assess the operating environment before every flight, including the limits published in the PMAT and in NOTAMs.

What the rule says

Information on the intended operating airspace, including flight routes, training areas, and limits or conditions set for that airspace or its use — including as published in the PMAT or a NOTAM.

What kinds of changes a NOTAM brings

Common changes relevant to drones: a temporary closure of an area for security activity or an incident, a new altitude limit, or opening/closing airspace around a large event. The practical meaning: an area that was open yesterday can be closed today — so a fresh check is needed each time.

NOTAM in DroneOps

DroneOps collects the notices relevant to drones and shows them alongside the map, so the pre-flight check includes the temporary changes — not only the permanent areas.

Frequently asked questions

What is a NOTAM?

An official notice of a temporary change to the airspace, such as a closed area or a new restriction, with start and end dates.

Why is it important to check NOTAMs before a drone flight?

Because an area that is usually open can close for a limited time. The regulations require checking airspace information, including NOTAMs, before every flight.

Where do I see a NOTAM relevant to drones?

DroneOps shows the notices relevant to drones alongside the map, as part of the pre-flight check.

Is this guide a flight authorization?

No. It is general information current as of the update date. For a point-specific check use the app, and for approvals use the official bodies.
